What is AI Elementary?

AI Elementary is a discussion forum focused on sparking dialogue around the integration of artificial intelligence in elementary education. It serves as a collaborative platform to investigate how AI tools can enhance, disrupt, or redefine traditional learning environments for young students; and as a platform to introduce and brainstorm ideas about designing elementary schools of the future.

How does AI Elementary work?

AI Elementary operates by collecting ideas and perspectives on the potential of AI and its implications and changes for elementary education from a variety of stakeholders. Then, using prompts and discussion questions we aim to facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations in a digital online forum that connects educators, technologists, and students. Through curated discussions under the “Engage” section, the project explores how AI can be meaningfully and ethically integrated into elementary education systems, while critically examining its impacts.

Why does AI Elementary exist?

AI Elementary was created to challenge the fragmented and often fearful approach to AI in education. It seeks to initiate deep, systemic conversations about whether AI supports or conflicts with the core purposes of elementary learning, to brainstorm approaches and ideas to implement AI for advancement of learning opportunities for students, as well as potential paths to mitigate AI related risks, ultimately helping schools in shaping deliberative and ethical strategies for the designing elementary education classrooms for a better near future. Because each school deals with these dilemmas individually, it is useful to create a shared platform to connect with colleagues and professionals in other places and disciplines.

We focus on elementary education for a reason: elementary education establishes the fundamentals of our education, builds our social and emotional skills, and leaves an imprint for motivation and self esteem into adulthood. Unlike middle school or high school, social media and the risk of plagiarism are lesser concerns. Elementary education allows us to narrow down on the core mission of human education and to establish the evolving goals and skills that would be required for children growing up in this new technologically inspired world.

Who founded AI Elementary?

AI Elementary was founded by Ariel Tromer, a student at Brookline High School, Massachusetts, who is passionate about enhancing students’ learning through technology. Ariel created AI Elementary as part of a leadership project at the MIT Leadership Training Institute program for Spring 2025. Learn more about Ariel here.
